Ende - Maumere (3D2N)

2015 Tribal Weaving of The Lesser Sunda Islands Pre Cruise Program

  Ende - Maumere

Our Textile Tour of the Lesser Sunda Islands excludes one of the weaving highlights of Flores Island – the remote Lio villages located in the isolated southern coastal region of mountainous Ende Regency.

This is not an oversight. It is simply not safe to access these villages directly from the sea.
We therefore want to offer our guests a three-day pre-cruise option to visit these villages overland, an interesting Lio weaving cooperative close to Ende city, and a traditional mountain village.

Our trip ends with a visit to the top of Kelimutu volcano to see the famous three-coloured crater lakes, the number one tourist attraction on Flores.

Why not get into the swing of our Textile Cruise early by joining us to explore a beautiful part of rugged Ende Regency that even visitors to the Kelimutu crater lakes never get to see? Sign up for our three-day pre-cruise option, using the modern, conveniently situated Kelimutu Ecolodge at Moni as our base.

DEPARTURES MAY 12 - 14, 2015

Day 1

After arriving at Ende on the early morning flight from Bali we will drive to the nearby district of Ndona to visit the Bou Sama Sama weaving cooperative, where a small group of Lio weavers are producing naturally dyed cloth. Returning to Ende town we will visit the local ikat market before taking lunch in a nearby modern restaurant. At the halfway point on our journey to Moni we will leave the highway to visit the dramatically situated mountain village of Desa Saga, with its interesting carvings, arriving at Kelimutu Ecolodge in time for a rest before dinner. Welcome drinks and a special traditional feast provide the perfect opportunity to share all that we have seen today and prepare for tomorrow.

Day 2

This morning we will head south on a narrow scenic road to the remote weaving village of Nggela, stopping along the way for photographs over the spectacular Mbuli Valley. The traditional boat-shaped village of Nggela has two rows of tall thatched houses facing each other across a central area dotted with stone tombs. The local Lio weavers produce some of the best quality ikat in Ende Regency. Although the use of commercial cotton is now almost universal and many weavers have adopted synthetic dyes, we will still get to see examples of naturally dyed cloth and the ceremonial lawo butu. We will enjoy a simple packed lunch and the villagers will brew us some of their local coffee. After exploring one of the traditional houses there will be time for some textile shopping. On our return journey we will make short stops in the weaving villages of Wolojita and Jopu.

Day 3

After breakfast we will take a scenic drive up the side of the volcano to the car park at the entrance to Kelimutu National Park. From there it is a pleasant 30 minute walk through woodland to the viewpoint over the spectacular three-coloured crater lakes. After our visit we will drive through yet more beautiful scenery on the way to Maumere harbour, boarding the Ombak Putih in time for a late lunch.

Participants should be aware that itinerary and program of our sea voyages occasionally may have to be modified, due to factors beyond our control : unfavorable weather conditions, delay in processing harbour clearances, modified schedules of domestic flights. We will adjust the program accordingly in the best interest of all.

Please note that the domestic flights are not included in the price.
