ACTIVITIES :
  • Dive or snorkel on the house reef.
  • Take a stroll on the jungle trail that leads to a beautiful private beach with an aquamarine swimming lagoon.
  • Climb the rocky outcrop 'house' mountain to see spectacular 360° views of Pulau Pef.
  • Walk down the jetty on the side opposite to the front main beach, for peace and quiet in a pristine mangrove bay.
  • Kayak around Pulau Pef's inlets and bays, islands, lagoons and hidden lake.
  • See the ancient rock paintings on the limestone cliffs.
  • Take a guided photo trek through the jungle, for incredible imaging opportunities.
  • Find the best spots to sit quietly to observe the particularly magnificent bird life on the island.

Pulau Pef is quite simply one of the most beautiful islands in the Raja Ampat. Dripping in lush virgin tropical jungle, the island is just waiting to be explored: spectacular bays, many smaller islets, blue lagoons, white sand beaches, hidden lakes, 'mushroom' outcrops, ancient rock art on karst cliffs, pristine blue-water mangroves, virgin jungle, and incredible variety of exotic birds, monitor lizards and cuscus. The island is surrounded by the world's richest reefs, many varied habitats and a myriad of spectacular dive-sites.

For underwater imaging enthusiasts, the Raja Ampat is a known to be a hot-spot - a 'wide angle' feast for the eyes and a 'macro' delight. The dedicated state-of-the-art Underwater Imaging Studio offers on site expertise, custom imaging services, rentals, workshops, trip movies, instruction, production support, presentations and more – one of a kind in the Raja Ampat area. Guided photo walks are also available for topside imaging enthusiasts. Pulau Pef allows for a host of activities close to nature: Kayaking along it's many islets, bays, beaches, cliffs, lagoons and hidden lakes, for snorkelling, swimming, exploring, birding and photography; climbing to the top of the 'house' mountain for spectacular 360° views; hiking through the jungle; bird-watching; walking the jungle trail to private beach and aquamarine lagoon for sunbathing, relaxing and swimming; diving and snorkelling along the house reef's fishy colourful coral gardens, bommies and overhangs. Not to mention the many photographic opportunities: flora and fauna in the surrounding jungle, birds, views, beaches, islands and panoramic views on boat tours around the island.

FAQ GENERAL :

Where is Raja4Divers?
•Raja4Divers is located on a private island called Pulau Pef (Pef Island) located in central Raja Ampat, West Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), Indonesia.

Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
•A 30 day non-extendable Visa On Arrival (VOA) is available for nationals of 63 countries (please check here) at a cost of USD 25 cash or IDR equivalent.

Do I need innoculations?
•No innoculations are required for Indonesia.

Is there Malaria in Papua?
•Yes, Malaria is present in Papua. Although there are surprisingly few mosquitoes on the island itself, it is recommended that you take care and exercise common sense, particularly at dawn and dusk. The liberal use of mosquito repellent is highly recommended, especially when passing through populous areas such as Sorong. Bear in mind that some malarial prophylactics cause adverse reactions in divers e.g. Lariam, so please discuss your travel plans with your doctor/travel clinic.

What day of the week do I need to be in Sorong?
•Saturday - the scheduled boat transfer to the island is at 12:30.

Can I arrive on a different day of the week?
There is a scheduled boat transfer only on Saturdays.
The 1 week packages are always from Saturday to Saturday.

How do I get to Pulau Pef?
•Make your way to Sorong, West Papua.
•Ujung Pandang (Makassar, Sulawesi) is the recommended best hub in Indonesia for direct flights to Sorong.
•Connect to Ujung Pandang from either Singapore or Jakarta.
There are two best recommended options:
•Option A: Arrive into Jakarta on a Friday, over-night at the Airport Hotel and then on Saturday morning at 05:00 connect to Sorong, via Ujung Pandang (Makassar, Sulawesi) using Express Air's XN800 daily flight. (The reservations team will assist you with domestic flight ticket arrangements)
OR
•Option B: Arrive in Singapore on a Friday, connect same day to Ujung Pandang (Makassar) using Garuda Indonesia, over-night in Ujung Pandang, then on Saturday morning at 08:40 connect to Sorong using Express Air's XN800 daily flight.
The scheduled boat transfer to Pulau Pef departs Sorong at 12:30. If Express Air is delayed, the boat departure will be delayed until the guests have arrived.

What about the return?
•All guests will be transferred back to Sorong by boat on Friday afternoon for an overnight stay in Sorong.
•The following morning, Saturday, those on Option A returning to Jakarta would check in at approximately 10am for the Express Air flight to Jakarta via Ujung Pandang, landing at approx. 15:10 in Jakarta.
•Those on Option B returning to Ujung Pandang to fly direct to Singapore, would check in at approximately 5am for the flight to Ujung Pandang which goes via Ambon and lands in Ujung Pandang at approx. 08:40.

How do I book? and what about domestic flights?
•Reservations will assist you with your booking, including the arrangements for domestic flight bookings on Express Air. An average estimated rate is applied to the invoice, as rates tend to fluctuate without notice, and 30 days before departure the E-TICKETS will be sent to you via e-mail. Any difference in the ticket price will be settled at the resort as part of the extra charges invoice.

What happens when I land in Jakarta for Option A?
•You will typically have to overnight in Jakarta, as the flight for Sorong departs early morning. We urge guests to make use of the Airport Hotel Jakarta due to its convenient location upstairs from the arrival gate. Another convenient option is the FM7 hotel also in the vicinity of the airport.

What happens when I land in Ujung Pandang from Singapore, for Option B?
•There is a very convenient Airport transit 'mini hotel' upstairs in the departure lounge on the 2nd floor, called 'Home In'.
•It is open 24hrs for mini stay (6 hours) or longer.
•Currently they do not have a website or e-mail address only Tel: +62 (0)411 3656123
•Ask Raja4Divers reservations to assist with advance bookings.
•If you prefer the long haul into town for a Hotel - ask reservations for recommendations.

How much Indonesian Rupiah cash should I carry with me?

•Carry a minimum of IDR 2 million in cash (roughly equivalent to USD 240) which should cover for Airport taxes, Marine Park fee, dinner in Sorong. (Please note: this is purely an estimation, and excludes extras like baggage fees, personal expenses, souvenirs and incidentals at the resort).

What do I need before check-in for the flight to Sorong?
•Be sure that you have enough IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) cash on you for excess luggage charges and airport taxes. Mention during check-in that you have diving gear, occasionally the rate becomes negotiable. The rates in Indonesia tend to fluctuate without notice and depending on the airline/route/aircraft type rates are typically between IDR 30 000 and IDR 50 000 per kilo. The stipulated luggage allowance per person is between 10 and 20 kg depending on airline/route/aircraft type.
Make provision for approximately IDR100 000 in cash per person, for domestic airport taxes round trip: Jakarta - Ujung Pandang - Sorong return, and approximately IDR 200 000 in cash per person, for international departure airport taxes.

What happens when I land in Ujung Pandang for transit on the way to Sorong?
•If you have taken the Express Air flight from Jakarta, there is a brief transit stop for re-fueling in Ujung Pandang (Makassar) South Sulawesi. The airport is modern by western standards, with a variety of souvenir/snack shops, mini restaurants, and toilets. You will be required to take all your hand luggage with you into the airport building and collect a transit card at the transit counter. Keep an eye on the monitors for any change in departure gate and time in case the announcements are not very clear.

How do I get my domestic airline tickets?
•Reservations will send you E-tickets via e-mail, 30 days prior to departure. Only the Ujung Pandang - Sorong - Ujung Pandang tickets are paper tickets and will be delivered to you at your selected hotel in Ujung Pandang.

What happens when I land in Sorong?
•You will need to land in Sorong on a Saturday, in order to take the scheduled 12:30 boat transfer to the island. At Sorong airport, you will be met by Raja4Divers staff. Please hand your passport and your numbered luggage tags to the Raja4Divers representative. You will be assisted with clearance and baggage. Please avoid crowding around the conveyor belt as porters will already have been assigned your numbered luggage tags to identify and carry your luggage to the waiting vehicle. You will then shuttled to the harbour for the boat transfer to the island. The boat will only wait for the Express Air XN800 flight. You are most welcome to make alternative flight arrangements, but should you not make it for the 12:30 transfer, you would then have to arrange a private charter at your own cost and claim back from your travel insurance. (Please note: a one way boat transfer can be in the region of USD850)

How long does it take to reach the island?
•Approximately 3 hrs or longer depending on conditions. The boat cuts across the Dampier strait over generally calm seas, with Salawati and Batanta on the port side (keep an eye out for whales and dolphins en route), then enters Waigeo's Kaboei bay following in the scenic path of the explorer Alfred Wallace through the famed 'Passage', a river-like gap between Gam and Waigeo islands, continuing west in the direction of Pulau Pef.

What do I need to take with me on the boat transfer?
•Sunscreen, sunglasses, a light waterproof wind breaker and your camera could all come in handy on the boat.
•Refreshments will be provided on board.

Is there a toilet on board?
•Depending on the boat used for the transfer, there may not be a toilet on board. Should this be the case, Raja4Divers staff in Sorong will let you know in advance and arrange a pit stop at the Raja4Divers Office before departure. Please be aware that the WC in Sorong airport is not pleasant to say the least, and you are urged to make use of the aircraft WC before landing in Sorong. A toilet stop could be arranged at one of the many beaches along the way, simply advise the crew if it is urgent.

What do I need to have ready on arrival at the resort?
•Please have the following ready to hand in at the briefing shortly after arrival: Passport (for photo-copies, it will be returned to you as soon as photo copies have been made); 4 X passport photos per person (for registration and in order to arrange a Surat Jalan (Travel permit for West Papua)- free of charge); outbound domestic flight details; IDR 500 000 in cash per person for the Marine Park Tag (IDR 250 000 for Indonesian nationals) free of charge for children under 12 years of age; Scuba diving certification card; Enriched Air certification card for Nitrox users; Proof/membership card for valid diving insurance that covers emergency evacuation; for divers who have previously experienced DCS, a letter from a hyperbaric doctor clearing them for diving.

FAQ DIVING :

What diving gear should I bring with me to the resort?
•Soft-gear: wetsuit, mask & snorkel, fins & booties - it is highly recommended that you bring your own for your comfort and convenience. While thickness of wetsuit neoprene versus lycra skin is a personal preference, it is strongly advised to wear a full suit offering full body coverage, as a barrier against hydroids on the abundant reefs and the possibility of marine 'stingers' in the water.
•A dive computer is mandatory for all divers (whether owned or rented).
•BCD, Regulator, Dive computer and Dive light can be rented. Rental stock is limited, please notify us 60 days in advance if you wish to rent these items. A SMB (surface marker buoy) is mandatory, bring it if you have your own, if not a loaner will be issued. A reef hook is also issued for use during the trip, but if you have your own, do bring it along.
•Dive knives and any other superfluous gear is not required.
•Divers must present their Scuba certification card, Enriched air card (Nitrox users) and Dive insurance proof/membership card which covers emergency evacuation, with them to the resort.

I am a snorkeller, what should I bring with me?
•If you have your own 'softgear' - wetsuit/rash-guard/lycra skin suit, mask & snorkel, do bring them with you. A lycra skin suit is highly recommended as a barrier against marine stingers in the water.

What should I NOT bring with me?
•Dive gloves - the use of gloves is strongly discouraged to enforce protection of the reef.
•Shorty wetsuit, as explained above.
•Dive knife and any other superfluous gadgets that add unnecessary weight to your limited baggage allowance.
•Please plan carefully in order to minimise non-biodegradable and non-recyclable garbage that remains on island, as this will have to be returned to Sorong.
•Try to use rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline, but should you have used alkaline batteries, please take them back with you to your country for proper disposal.
•Fishing/spearfishing equipment.

I have a regulator with a DIN fitting, do you have DIN tanks?

If the boat is full, these personal bags should be kept to a minimum and as small as possible.

What can I do on Pulau Pef if I don't dive?
•There is fantastic snorkelling around Pulau Pef or by joining the dive-boat on the scheduled excursions, you might find there are beach/island/mangrove interludes in between diving and snorkelling.
•Topside, a tour of Pulau Pef itself will reveal the beauty and pristine nature of the Raja Ampat in a nutshell: spectacular bays, beaches, coconut palms, blue water mangroves, karst cliffs, ancient rock-art paintings, birds, wild orchids, hidden lakes, blue lagoons, limestone mushroom islands. Take a Kayak and go exploring.
•There are amazing photographic opportunities at the view points on the climbable hills on the island, or views of the resort on the easily accessible cliff overlooking Pef beach. Bird lovers will be (bird) heaven with just the incredible early morning cacophony of bird sounds, and then finding quiet spots to do some bird watching.
•Hot and steamy jungle treks will reveal enormous ancient hard-wood trees, strange brightly coloured wild mushrooms, thick bamboo forests reaching for the sky, mangroves with their bright red crabs, snails and mudskippers. Insect lovers will find a great variety of beautiful and strange critters if they care to take a closer look.
•And of course, there is always the urge to relax...particularly on the inviting large private deck of your bungalow, where you can read or relax in your hammock or just enjoy the balmy tropical island.
